About South Africa's Public Holiday Calendar
South Africa's holiday calendar is dense with days commemorating post-apartheid constitutional values (Human Rights Day, Freedom Day, Heritage Day, Day of Reconciliation), a deliberate calendar design reflecting the country's democratic transition after 1994.
Under Section 2 of the Public Holidays Act, a holiday falling on a Sunday automatically makes the following Monday a public holiday too; in 2026, National Women's Day (August 9) falls on a Sunday, so Monday, August 10 is also an official holiday.
